Acadian Ambulance held their 2020 Medic of the Year Celebration online on Tuesday, September 1, coinciding with the company’s 49th anniversary. The program is traditionally held as a luncheon at the Cajundome, but this year, due to COVID-19 restrictions and social distancing guidelines, the company transitioned to a virtual event.
The program honored Acadian’s Paramedics and EMTs of the Year, all of Acadian’s medical team, and healthcare professionals.
Steve Scalise, Republican Whip of the House of Representatives, presented the keynote speech, where he recounted his personal experience with EMS personnel after being shot.
“A paramedic saved my life on June 14, 2017. My ambulance hit morning traffic, and the paramedic noticed a rescue helicopter heading toward the Congressional baseball field. He took a chance, the kind of split-second decision that all of you train for, and he turned that ambulance around. The helicopter was waiting for me, and the paramedics transferred me to the helicopter. Doctors told me that I had not even minutes, but seconds to live. The heroic actions of the paramedics on that ball field ensured that I would live,” Scalise said.
“The work you all do on a daily basis is nothing short of heroic – you respond to every conceivable emergency, from natural disasters to the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, selflessly working to save lives when we didn’t know what we were up against,” he continued.
Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Senator Bill Cassidy, Senator John Kennedy, Governor John Bel Edwards, Coach Ed Orgeron and Coach Lou Holtz shared messages of support throughout the program.
Acadian Ambulance Chief Medical Officer Dr. Chuck Burnell introduced the 2020 Paramedics and EMTs of the Year – Paramedic Jeremy Brown and EMT Liz Hill represent Acadian’s Southwest Louisiana service area, and Paramedic Bjoern Landeck and EMT Karra Cross represent Acadian’s South-Central Texas service area.
“None of our great accomplishments are possible without our team of dedicated employees. To each employee on the Acadian team, thank you. Our company’s success is directly related to the incredible work ethic, culture and Christian attitude you all carry each day,” said Acadian Chairman & CEO Richard Zuschlag.
