April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a reminder that one decision behind the wheel can have life-changing consequences. As prom and graduation celebrations kick off across the area, Acadian Ambulance urges teens and families to stay safe by avoiding distracted, impaired, and reckless driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, sending or reading a text takes a driver’s eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that is like driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed.

Keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Put the phone away and avoid texting, calls, selfies, or social media while driving.

  • Never drive impaired by alcohol, drugs, or any substance that affects your ability to drive safely.

  • Always wear a seatbelt — every passenger, every ride.

  • Avoid speeding and give yourself extra time to get where you’re going.

  • Limit distractions in the vehicle, including loud passengers and unnecessary stops.

  • Make a plan before the night begins, including a designated driver, rideshare, or trusted adult.

“A quick text, one bad decision, or one distraction can have lasting consequences. Planning and staying focused behind the wheel can make all the difference,” said Acadian Ambulance Health, Safety, and Environmental Specialist Blake Miller.
