Through a new emergency medical technician class, Acadian Ambulance has teamed up with Livonia High School in Pointe Coupee Parish to help high school students join the workforce right after graduation.

More than 120 Livonia High School soon-to-be seniors learned about the new elective that will begin in the fall. The class will prepare students to take the national registry exam upon graduation and immediately begin working in the emergency medical services industry.

Justin Cox, operations manager for the Capital Area, speaks of Acadian’s partnership with Livonia High School. “Thanks to the hard word and diligence by Livonia High’s Principal Stacey Gueho and school board, together we are providing a step-by-step outline for students interested in a career in high demand with great pay.”

Becoming a certified EMT opens up an individual’s career path to countless job opportunities, such as working on an ambulance, offshore, providing advanced medical support on an air ambulance, teaching others as an EMS instructor, working at sporting events, festivals and major motion pictures, hospitals and clinics. The training is also beneficial as a starting point to a career as a nurse or a doctor.

Students are already showing a high interest in the class, which is limited to 20 students.

“I want to be able to help people, to be that person that makes a difference in their lives,” junior Antonio Taylor said. “This class will let me become a medic, begin work, and also attend college all at the same time.”

Acadian’s goal is to apply the elective to more school’s curricula throughout its more than 60 service areas in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi.

“The demand is there; the interest is there,” Cox said. “We just need to get students to sign up. I’m hopeful that this will begin a domino effect to other schools in our area.”

Since 1971, Acadian has been committed to providing the highest level of emergency medical care and transportation possible. In the past decade, the company has expanded to include a diverse suite of services in health, safety, security, and transportation. Acadian’s six divisions are Acadian Ambulance Service, Acadian Total Security, Air Med, Executive Aircraft Charter Service, National EMS Academy and Safety Management Systems.
