Susan Smith worked for Acadian for 37 years and 9 months. Her journey with the company began in 1988, and throughout her time here, she held various roles that contributed to Acadian’s mission and operations.
Starting her career in the field, she worked in swing shifts before transferring to Baton Rouge. She eventually returned to Lafayette, where she served at the Scott station and company headquarters. After a lower back injury, she transitioned into the office and spent more than 20 years applying her skills and experience to administrative and compliance work.
During her time in the office, Susan served as an assistant supervisor, specialist, and reimbursement specialist. Her work included reviewing medical records, filing medicare claims, handling appeals, including law judge hearings, and managing Air Med appeals at all levels.
Reflecting on her time with Acadian, Susan shared, “Working at Acadian was a new adventure every day. That was one of the main reasons I got into the EMS field.” Her favorite memories include long shifts with her partners, enjoying home-cooked meals, and the meaningful connections she made with patients.
Now retired, she is focused on caring for her husband, who has pulmonary fibrosis and COPD. She looks forward to the possibility of traveling together and plans to explore volunteer opportunities in the future.
Her advice to current and future employees? “Treat your patient as you would want your family to be treated.”
Susan remains connected to Acadian, staying in touch with many of our current and former team members.
