Each year, Acadian Ambulance recognizes its exceptional EMS personnel for their tireless work ethic and dedication. From across the company’s four-state service area, 32 finalists were nominated by their peers for displaying exemplary attitudes and providing excellent patient care.

Top Honorees
Joannie Sanchez, Flight RN, Acadian Air Med
Joannie has been a valued member of Acadian’s Air Med team for two years, serving as a flight nurse on Air Med 1 in Lafayette. Originally from LaPlace, she resides in Duson with her rescue dog, Xanadu. After earning her EMT certification in 2018, she worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Emergency Room tech while completing her Bachelor of Science in nursing at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Joannie gained experience in the ER, trauma care, and ICU before joining Air Med. She is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Nursing, specializing in Adult-Gerontological Acute Care Nursing, at the University of South Alabama.
Since joining Air Med, Joannie has shown exceptional dedication through mentoring new nurses, and actively participating in the clinical development team and safety committee. Her colleagues admire her commitment, often going above and beyond to support her team. Joannie’s goal is to continue her education and provide the best care for her patients.
Alison Cagle, EMT, Hub City
Alison began her journey in EMS while still in high school, where she took EMR classes. She obtained her EMT certification in early 2021 and worked in Sacramento, California, for two years before moving across the country to join the Acadian family. Alison is currently in paramedic school and works out of Lafayette. She has a passion for EMS and for educating kids on the importance of EMS, and hopes to have even a small impact on the youth in her area.
Alison specializes in protection training for dogs, and her paramedic partner stated that her training with dogs has come in handy on many calls where dogs are present.
Alison takes immense pride in her work and consistently brings a smile and a positive attitude to everything she does. Her unmatched dedication and strong work ethic have earned her the respect of both her peers and superiors. Her dedication to EMS, consistent hard work, and commitment to quality patient care led to her recognition as EMT of the Year.
Regional Medics of the Year
Bryce Poincon, Paramedic, Bayou Region
Bryce’s 9-year journey in the paramedic field began the day he donned the uniform. As a Critical Care Transport (CCT) paramedic, he’s provided lifesaving care in critical moments. As a Field Training Officer (FTO), he’s mentored countless new paramedics, sharing his knowledge and ensuring the next generation is just as skilled and compassionate. Now, as a Paramedic Field Supervisor, Bryce leads by example, upholding the highest standards of care and professionalism for his team and the community.
Bryce’s dedication goes beyond technical skills—he approaches every call with calm, a sharp mind, and unwavering commitment. His leadership is built on respect, humility, and responsibility.
Tanya McPherson, EMT, Bayou Region
Tanya excels in her professional role and demonstrates leadership, compassion, and a deep commitment to the welfare of others. With over three years of experience as an EMT, Tanya continually pushes the boundaries of exceptional care. Her passion for her work is evident in every aspect of her job, from responding to emergency calls with calm precision to going above and beyond. As a Field Training Officer, she mentors recruits, sharing her knowledge and dedication to service. Tanya leads by example, instilling confidence in others with patience, wisdom, and a commitment to excellence.
Her clinical skills are exceptional, earning her the Clinical Excellence Award for her ability to assess and respond to critical situations with care. Tanya’s performance also earned her the President Performance Award, a well-deserved recognition of her tireless work ethic.
Kate Pringle, Paramedic, Capital Region
Kate is a dedicated professional with a passion for helping others and embodies the qualities of an exceptional paramedic. Originally from England and raised in Australia, Kate’s experiences in diverse environments have shaped her unique approach to emergency medical services.
After high school, Kate was inspired to become a paramedic after witnessing a paramedic team in action during an emergency scene. The crew’s teamwork and quick, life-saving decisions ignited her passion for pre-hospital care, leading her to pursue a Bachelor of Paramedic Science at Flinders University in South Australia.
For the past three years, Kate has served in Louisiana, making remarkable contributions to the team and community. In addition to her role as a paramedic in Livingston Parish, she holds her Critical Care Transport (CCT) and Field Training Officer (FTO) certifications, and serves on the Critical Stress Incident (CSI) peer support team. Kate also supports the profession as an adjunct for the National EMS Academy and as a recruiter for specialized initiatives.
Currently working toward earning her Certified Flight Paramedic (FP-C) certification, Kate aspires to become a flight paramedic.
Kaydee Kidder, EMT, Capital Region
Raised in Baton Rouge, Kaydee initially pursued nursing but shifted her focus to EMS after caring for her mother during her battle with cancer. This experience revealed her true calling to become a first responder. In July 2022, she began EMT school at the National EMS Academy, and within a year and a half, joined Acadian Ambulance in Livingston Parish.
Kaydee’s approach to patient care is compassionate and professional, offering emotional support and exceptional service. Her experiences inspired her to deepen her knowledge and continue the mission of saving lives. She now mentors new hires as a Field Training Officer, helping them navigate the challenges of the job with encouragement and empathy.
Currently in paramedic school and graduating in July, Kaydee continues to expand her expertise in emergency prehospital care. Her unwavering commitment to advancing in the EMS field and her passion for serving others make her an invaluable asset to the team.
Lee Thompson, Paramedic, Central LA
Lee consistently demonstrates outstanding patient care, dedication to learning, and a strong work ethic, making a significant impact on our team and community.
His commitment to patient care is evident in every interaction, always treating patients with compassion and professionalism. He goes above and beyond to ensure the best outcomes. He is dedicated to professional development, regularly participating in training, mentoring, and sharing his knowledge as a Field Training Officer (FTO).
Since joining Acadian in April 2016, Lee has advanced from EMT to paramedic, CCT paramedic, and Air Med alternate. He has been a volunteer firefighter since 2014, earning promotions to Lieutenant in 2015 and Captain in 2016. As a medical officer since 2019, Lee has revamped the EMS program and became a licensed EMS instructor, launching an EMS education program to train fire departments.
Lee’s work ethic and teamwork have made him a role model, earning him the VFW EMT of the Year Award and the Appreciation Award from Rapides Medical Center.
Thando Pahla, EMT, Central LA
Thando has proven to be an invaluable asset to the CENLA team, consistently demonstrating remarkable talent and interpersonal skills.
His background in healthcare, with both parents being registered nurses at Cabrini Hospital, has contributed to his proficiency and dedication in the field. Growing up in a medical household has given him a unique perspective on patient care, allowing him to blend compassion with clinical expertise.
Additionally, Thando’s ability to remain calm under pressure, combined with his empathetic approach, sets him apart from his peers. He has not only mastered the technical aspects of emergency medical care but also excels in providing comfort and reassurance to patients during their most vulnerable moments.
Kim Cole, Paramedic, Central TX
Kim joined Acadian Ambulance in September 2022 and serves in Cedar Creek. She has quickly become a top performer, consistently demonstrating professionalism, compassion, and skill.
Kim’s positive attitude and approachability make her a pleasure to work with. She is dedicated to mentoring her colleagues and fostering a supportive and collaborative team environment. In March 2024, Kim received the Meritorious Service Award for her exceptional response to a mass casualty incident involving a school bus rollover. County officials and emergency agencies also recognized her leadership under pressure. In October 2024, she earned Acadian’s President’s Performance Award for her continued excellence.
Kim’s leadership extends beyond her technical expertise. She provides valuable guidance to junior paramedics and EMTs, ensuring smooth operations in high-pressure situations. Her proactive approach to professional development keeps her ahead in emergency care practices and technologies.
Originally from Bendigo, Australia, Kim earned a bachelor’s degree in Paramedic Practice with honors from LaTrobe University in 2021.
MacKenzie Dowse, EMT, Central TX
MacKenzie excels in clinical skills, patient care, and interpersonal communication. Her nurturing nature and warm smile make patients feel at ease, setting her apart in emergency medical services.
MacKenzie’s professionalism shines as she works alongside Critical Care Transport paramedics. Her adaptability and strong work ethic have earned her recognition, including being named an Outstanding EMS Crew by a Central Texas hospital in 2023. In 2024, she stepped up to support Acadian’s expansion within the Dallas market.
Initially pursuing interior design, MacKenzie shifted her focus to neuroscience psychology before discovering her passion for EMS. After graduating from Trinity EMS Academy in Georgia, she worked as an EMT and office manager at a ketamine clinic in Savannah. After relocating to Texas, she has continued to thrive in her EMS career, with plans to pursue advanced medical education.
Chad Johnston, Paramedic, Houston
Chad first learned about Acadian through his Australian paramedic studies. After becoming a paramedic, he moved to Houston, where he quickly became a favorite among his peers.
Chad is personable and friendly, always seen with a smile. He is eager to gain knowledge and apply it to his patient care. This drive has helped him excel as a capable paramedic, recently earning certification as a Critical Care Transport (CCT) paramedic.
Brandon Jones, EMT, Houston
Brandon started at Acadian as an ambulance driver. He has worked his way up to van operator, EMT, and is now a Field Training Officer (FTO) in a primarily 911 setting. He has great patient care and is a compassionate person.
Not only did he work hard to get where he is, but he did it all despite suffering a hemorrhagic stroke during one of his shifts. He made a full recovery and used this as a teaching tool to show new hires that they can achieve any goal they set their mind to.
Brandi Leonard, Paramedic, Hub City
Brandi was born and raised in Berwick, where she still resides. She started her EMS career in 2007 as an EMT-Basic and became a paramedic in 2008. During her 16 years at Acadian, she has worked in the Hub City District and Bayou Region.
Brandi has made a positive impact on many people, especially her patients, partners, fellow first responders, and facility staff. She is a well of knowledge, which she freely shares with all who ask or need her guidance.
Through the years, Brandi has earned many titles, certifications and awards, including Firefighter 1, Firefighter 1 Instructor, LA State EMS Instructor, AHA BLS & ACLS Instructor, Acadian’s Meritorious Service Award, Critical Care Transport Paramedic, Senior Field Training Officer, and Associate Quality Improvement Coordinator.
Charles Wise, Paramedic, Mississippi
Charles began his career while serving our country in the United States Coast Guard. When he was discharged, he began working for a local ambulance provider, serving the citizens of the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1991.
Since coming to Acadian in the spring of 2024, Charles has been an asset to the team. He has brought his extensive knowledge of paramedicine and leadership. Charles wears many hats: District Chief for the North Woolmarket Volunteer Fire District from 2004-2020, and a member of the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation and Acadian’s South Mississippi Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team.
Charles is also a certified instructor for the American Heart Association in all disciplines, as well as Advanced Medical Life Support.
He currently works in Harrison County and plays a key role in our relationships with ancillary agencies. Charles serves as the Acadian liaison for the Harrison County Emergency Operations Center. His many years of experience coordinating large events like Mardi Gras, Cruisin’ the Coast, and hurricane responses make him a great fit for the position.
Charles is highly respected by his colleagues, and members of the local fire department continue to look to him as a trusted leader in every facet of EMS.
Noah Esparza, EMT, Mississippi
Noah has been an EMT for 2 years and has been with Acadian since May 2024. From a young age, he has always wanted to help people, drawing inspiration from his parents, both officers in the United States Air Force.
Noah aspires to never stop learning. Even on the busiest days, his infectious positive attitude shines on others. Those on the Mississippi Gulf Coast who have had the pleasure of working with Noah will attest that he strives to be the best EMT possible by staying engaged with the patient and his partner throughout each emergency he is assigned.
Noah has been recognized by his peers, local hospital staff, and the public for his professionalism and patient care. He plans to continue his career in EMS by attending paramedic school and eventually becoming a flight paramedic.
Elaine Carter, Paramedic, North LA
Elaine began her EMS career in 1989 with the West Carroll Volunteer Ambulance Service, inspired by her father and the critical need for first responders in her rural community.
Elaine has served as a Paramedic Field Supervisor and Operations Supervisor. In addition to her leadership responsibilities, she serves as a flex Critical Care Transport (CCT) paramedic, covering shifts from Monroe to Shreveport.
She is a dedicated Field Training Officer and a vital member of the crew engagement and Critical Stress Incident (CSI) teams. Her leadership, expertise, and commitment have earned her deep respect from colleagues, patients, and community members.
Her passion lies in supporting the next generation of EMS professionals, ensuring they feel secure in their roles and understand their vital impact. She strives to guide them toward achieving their career goals.
Kurstie Doles, EMT, North LA
A native of Bastrop, LA, Kurstie began her EMS career with Acadian in January 2023. Quickly distinguishing herself, she was promoted to EMT Field Supervisor in 2024 and has been an invaluable asset to the leadership team. In addition to her supervisory role, she serves as a flex EMT in Ouachita Parish, working on both ALS and BLS units.
Kurstie’s dedication extends beyond the ambulance. She is an Explorer Post Advisor, Crew Engagement Coordinator, Regional Newsletter editor, and Field Training Officer, shaping the next generation of EMS professionals. She is set to earn her paramedic certification later this year. Her ultimate goal is to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
With her strong work ethic, unwavering determination, and passion for building relationships, Kurstie has made a lasting impact on both her team and the community she serves.
Marcela Vazquez, Paramedic, North TX
Marcela is a valued paramedic who has been with Acadian for over three years. She currently supports our dedicated operations for Parkland Health in Dallas. Known for her compassion and respect for all patients, Marcela consistently advocates for their needs and has earned immense respect from her peers.
Always seen with a warm smile, Marcela maintains a professional appearance, including a spotless uniform and meticulously maintained unit, reflecting her pride in representing Acadian and the North Texas region. Marcela embodies the highest standards of our organization and serves as a role model for others in the field.
Mela Trimble, EMT, North TX
Mela is an Advanced EMT who joined Acadian in December 2021. She has quickly distinguished herself through her dedication and reliability. Her compassion extends beyond patient care—she regularly assists colleagues, helps manage station supplies, and takes on additional responsibilities. Mela’s commitment to excellence led to her promotion as a Field Training Officer (FTO) and Senior FTO. Her colleagues admire her for her unwavering support and mentorship.
Mela is currently enrolled in Paramedic school while working in Collin County. Her medical career began in 1988 as a CNA in nursing homes and hospitals, and she earned her EMT certification in 1996, followed by her A-EMT certification in 2000. Throughout her career, Mela has worked in diverse roles, gaining invaluable experience in various healthcare settings.
Meg McLeod, Paramedic, Northshore
Meg is a Critical Care Transport (CCT) paramedic who joined Acadian in August 2019. She began her career as an EMT and completed the accelerated paramedic program through National EMS Academy. She currently works in Tangipahoa Parish.
Meg has earned recognition from her partner and coworkers for treating her patients like family, always going above and beyond to ensure their care. She also enjoys baking treats for her crews during the holidays.
Meg’s journey into medicine began in 2004 when she volunteered with the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (S.A.N.E.) program at Earl K. Long Hospital. The S.A.N.E. program taught her the importance of emergency medicine, and after working as a patient care tech in hospital and clinic settings, she decided to attend EMT school at National EMS Academy.
When asked why she chose EMS, Meg says, “EMS chose me.”
Meg has a strong interest in Acadian’s Quality Improvement department and nursing school. She is also an associate instructor at National EMS Academy in New Orleans and is considering teaching as a potential future path.
Christian Kinsley, EMT, Northshore
Christian joined Acadian Ambulance as an EMT in February 2024, and currently works out of Covington.
He began as an EMR, working on the van and providing transport for wheelchair patients, while also spending time on BLS and ALS units. He joined the EMT class at the National EMS Academy, and received his certification in August 2024.
Christian has been recognized by his coworkers and patients for being friendly and helpful, and providing excellent care. He shows empathy and compassion, treating his patients like family.
He started this career after working in the restaurant industry, always wanting to help others. Encouraged by his brother, a paramedic, he joined the EMS field and has not looked back. He loves the family atmosphere of Acadian and the friends that he has made.
Christian plans to attend the paramedic program and is very interested in one day joining Acadian Air Med.
Whitney Houston, Paramedic, Orleans
Whitney joined the Acadian Ambulance team in April 2014, and throughout her ten-year career, she has demonstrated dedication, skill, and commitment to patient care. Her professionalism, compassion, and leadership qualities are truly commendable.
Whitney exemplifies the role of a natural leader. She has a keen ability to provide expert medical treatment while also offering empathy and support to patients and their families. Her willingness to mentor new team members and share her knowledge further demonstrates her commitment to the profession.
Whitney is currently a Paramedic Field Supervisor (PFS), maintains her Critical Care Transport (CCT) certification, and is a member of Acadian’s New Orleans Bike Team, highlighting her expertise and dedication.
Shannon Majcina, EMT, Orleans
Throughout the years, Shannon has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty, demonstrating exceptional professionalism, compassion, and leadership to ensure the safety and well-being of patients in critical situations. Her quick thinking, calm demeanor under pressure, and unwavering commitment to excellence make her a vital asset to the Orleans team and the community she serves.
Beyond her technical expertise, Shannon embodies the true spirit of EMS—offering comfort in times of distress, mentoring colleagues, and advocating for continuous improvement in patient care. Whether responding to high-stress emergencies, providing lifesaving interventions, or educating the next generation of EMTs, Shannon exemplifies the best of our profession. She is part of the New Orleans Bike Team and a van operations leader, and is trained in dispatching standby events.
Sandy Castorena, Paramedic, South-Central TX
Sandy began her career at Acadian as one of South-Central TX’s first van drivers. She advanced her career to become an EMT and paramedic. In her 16 years at Acadian, Sandy has consistently provided excellent care. As a proud veteran, she plans to pursue a second career giving back to veterans once she retires from Acadian.
Sandy always strives to improve and challenges herself to try new things and learn continuously. She has an excellent working relationship with her colleagues. She is always ready to roll up her sleeves and get the job done. Sandy is a well-rounded paramedic and an exemplary person.
Nicholas Wiatrek, EMT, South-Central TX
Nic has been an essential part of the South-Central TX team, as well as Acadian’s hurricane strike team. Always willing to help and learn new things, he is trustworthy and competent. He treats people well, has a great attitude, and is supportive of his peers, including new EMT students. Nic has developed a passion for teaching, often holding study groups after his shift for students in his class.
Nic has multiple college degrees and loves working in EMS.
Andrew Heuler, Paramedic, Southeast TX
Since joining Acadian three years ago, Andrew has consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication to both his role and the community he serves. Within his first year, Andrew earned his Paramedic Field Supervisor (PFS) designation, proving his commitment and drive for excellence early on.
He seeks educational opportunities to enhance his skills and knowledge, ensuring he stays at the forefront of the profession. Andrew leads the Beaumont Explorer Post, mentoring and inspiring the next generation of EMS professionals.
He serves as an alternate for the Acadian Air Med team, showcasing his adaptability and readiness for a variety of critical situations. Recently, Andrew took charge of the Emergency Care Attendant (ECA) trainee operations interviews, demonstrating strong leadership and a commitment to fostering growth within our team.
Joseph Bessard, EMT, Southeast TX
Joseph has displayed exceptional qualities since he joined Acadian Ambulance. His consistent presence, positive attitude, and infectious enthusiasm create a cheerful atmosphere. He is receptive to guidance, takes initiative, and demonstrates composure and compassion in all situations.
Joseph’s dedication to patient care, respect for others, and ability to collaborate effectively are outstanding. He is an inspiration to those around him and elevates the standard of patient care.

Nathan Emmons, Paramedic, Southwest LA
Nathan began his EMS career immediately after graduating from Dequincy High School in 2021. He started as an EMT and completed the accelerated paramedic program at the National EMS Academy. He currently works as a Critical Care Transport (CCT) paramedic.
Nathan has a remarkable work ethic, exemplary paramedic skills, and is respected by his peers for his positive attitude and leadership. He leads by example and challenges his teammates to always do the right thing.
Nathan serves as a Field Training Officer (FTO) and mentor, and is an adjunct instructor at the National EMS Academy, giving back to future EMTs.
Sydney Horne, EMT, Southwest LA
Sydney began her career with Acadian in July 2018 and currently works in Vinton. As a Field Training Officer (FTO) and mentor, Sydney is responsible for guiding new team members on the Acadian Way and ensuring their competency in providing excellent patient care. Her contributions to the new-hire clearance process have been overwhelmingly positive in preparing new team members.
As an EMT, Sydney anticipates the paramedic’s needs on scene and provides a smooth, quality ride for both the patient and paramedic to the hospital. Sydney was an Acadian Ambulance President’s Performance Award recipient in 2024 and has the respect of her teammates. Sydney has completed the anatomy and physiology (A&P) prerequisite course and is considering enrolling in the paramedic program at National EMS Academy; she also aspires to be a physician and has been prepping for the MCAT.
Sydney has shown herself to be caring, proficient, and competent in all her job responsibilities as an EMT, FTO, and mentor.
Erica Shipp, Paramedic, Tennessee
Erica has been with Acadian Ambulance since 2022. She joined as an EMT-B and attended the National EMS Academy‘s accelerated paramedic class in Lafayette. She then completed the Critical Care Transport (CCT) program and now works on a CCT ambulance in Memphis. She is a Field Training Officer (FTO) and enjoys teaching new hires the Acadian Way.
Erica always has a willingness to learn and help others. She takes the time to listen and makes sure that everyone is included in the conversation. She then makes a thoughtful and inclusive decision on what needs to be done. Her honest, friendly, and considerate nature makes her a great paramedic and a wonderful coworker.
Erica exemplifies professionalism, compassion, and excellence in every aspect of her work. Erica consistently goes above and beyond to ensure her patients are comfortable and thoroughly evaluated, never compromising on the quality of care.
She holds everyone to the highest standards and communicates effectively with nursing staff at clinics and hospitals, always advocating for her patients.
Tykelia Bowen, EMT, Tennessee
Tykelia has been with Acadian Ambulance since 2022. She joined as a driver and quickly obtained her EMT-B certification. She has become a Field Training Officer (FTO) and now trains the next generation of EMTs and EMT apprentices. She travels between our two regions in Tennessee, filling in as necessary. Ty plans to attend paramedic school in the fall at a local college and then continue to obtain her nursing license.
Ty works hard and is determined to get the job done. She helps out her coworkers, always asking if they need a break and might even buy them a meal. She has a can-do attitude and is a perfect example of the Acadian Way. She takes great pride in her work.
Trish Krampe, Remote Paramedic, Safety Management Systems
Trish has been with Acadian’s sister company, Safety Management Systems, for over three years as a remote paramedic. A paramedic since 1997, she started with Ferdinand EMS in Indiana and later joined Spencer County EMS, where she still picks up shifts.
Trish stepped up during the COVID pandemic, staffing a FEMA project in Kentucky, despite her preference for offshore work. She received multiple FEMA recognitions for her teamwork and clinical excellence. Between assignments, she also volunteered along the Gulf Coast.
Her dedication earned her a permanent spot on one of SMS’ top client sites. In January, she received an SMS Standout Award, based on the client’s glowing feedback. They praised her communication with medical control, patient care management, and professionalism, highlighting her commitment to safety and education through crew training sessions.
Trish exemplifies SMS’ values, continuously demonstrating initiative, dedication, and excellence in every role she takes on.
