Pioneering new EMS delivery models

In parts of our service area, our medics are able to treat patients in the comfort of their own homes, rather than transport them unnecessarily to hospitals and emergency departments.

The alternative care models, known as Treat in Place (TIP) and Alternative Destination Transport (ADT), allow EMS crews to offer solutions to best meet the needs of patients who are sick, but stable.

The alternative care models, known as Treat in Place (TIP) and Alternative Destination Transport (ADT), allow EMS crews to offer solutions to best meet the needs of patients who are sick, but stable.

Frequently treated conditions:

  • Mild asthma
  • COPD exacerbation
  • COVID-19 symptoms
  • Hyperglycemia/Hypoglycemia
  • Dehydration
  • Nausea/Vomiting/Diarrhea

When patients may need to see a provider, but not necessarily require an ED visit, paramedics utilize Alternative Destination Transport. Patients can be transported to an urgent care clinic, physician’s office or behavioral health facility. Some of the conditions that warrant Alternative Destination Transport include:

  • Non-traumatic joint and back pain
  • Broken bones or sprains
  • Cuts requiring stitches
  • Diagnostic testing
  • Mental health crisis
